Seventh Chords
Welcome to 7th chords. What is that? A seventh chord is a chord that has four different types of notes within it, instead of our original three. To keep things simple think of it as a more colorful version of a major or a minor chord. In fact seventh chords are exactly that: a major (or minor) chord with an additional note–the “seventh”–added to it. Study these shapes against your original bar chords and you will start to notice that only one or two strings have been altered (even if they require an entirely different hand shape.) The altered notes are usually the sevenths! That’s it in a nutshell. All the following examples are 7th chords in C. Check it out:
